WY2016 Storm 59

This storm is brand new energy popping and crackling out at sea and promises to be another memorable, and dangerous, storm event for Washington state.

0000 PST 160313… It begins. The new cyclone is sending a warm front toward Seattle and a cold front toward California. Storm-59-160313-0000PST

0515 PDT 160313… This cyclone, unfortunately, isn’t California bound. It’s moving NE. As the cold front comes ashore today, and spreads south down the length of California, the energy center of the system will be headed in the opposite direction, to Seattle. In the forecast below (University of Washington NAM model), pressure isobars are tight over Washington State and California’s Sierra Nevada this evening. Storm Totals

Storm 59 was the 14th storm of significant overall impact for California, but was a super-major if you consider the entire storm. But most of it occurred outside of California. On California and vicinity, 59 dropped 37.95 inches of water on the 65 sampler cities, about .58 inches per city. This storm was likely last hurrah of Water Year 2016.
