WY2016 Storm 57

I. Welcome Storm 57!

Storm 57 is moving aggressively toward Northern California from a westerly direction, where it will run into the stalled dying behemoth of Storm 56, which is still raining on the North Bay Area, North Coast Range, Sacramento Valley, California Cascades, Siskiyous, Trinity Alps, Northern Sierra and north central state of Nevada, as it has for the last 24 hours. It’s just like leaving the sprinklers on in one part of the yard – this SW to NE swath has gotten absolutely soaking wet. Storm 57 is coming in to shake things up.

II. Forecasts and Events of Storm 57

0000 PST 160311… Storm 57 Arrives on NW California coast. Storm 56 still in same exact spot it’s been in for the last 24 hrs! It’s still producing pockets of moderate rain along the moisture train known as an atmospheric river, too, though the river has gotten noticeably thinner.  NWS radar mosaic.

0100 PST 160311… Rainfall totals below are for the last 3 hours in this screenshot. Since Storm 57 is about take over Storm 56 (only about 7 miles between them!), midnight will suffice as an adequate dividing line between the two storms. As soon as that thin gap disappears, I consider Storm 56 over and done.Storm57-0311-0100.jpg
