Dave’s Hikes: The San Joaquin River Trail from BLM Parking Lot to Almost Big Sandy Creek, Dec. 29

On December 29, 2013, I hiked from the Ya-Gub-We-Tuh Trailhead to almost Big Sandy Creek Bridge and then back on a most beautiful winter day. It looks deceptively like an autumn day because of the strange effect of extreme drought elongating a season, autumn, into winter. But even as autumns go, most don’t have a chance to achieve color so agedly seasoned in such advanced, matured fall colors.
I’m hiking in the deep of winter on the occasion of improving my fitness because on January 13th, 2014, I’m starting my job as a seasonal seafood processor in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, with Westward Seafood, Inc. I will need every footstep I take to condition me for 18 hour shifts in the isolated outpost, during which time I will be cut off from television and the internet for three months and then returned safety to the California earth.
