In Fresno it’s not uncommon to see a kid riding one stolen bike and guiding another one down Cedar or First Avenue, sometimes two with each free hand, from the university to ramshackle neighborhoods on the south side. The races of these individuals is surprisingly diverse: Hmong, mixed, hispanic, whiteboy, black, though their obvious economic background is not. The black ones of course cause the most anger, because we are all a bunch of racists. To the thief’s point of view what they do is a kind of job they’ve mastered. Next comes the processing and pushing of the stolen goods through distribution networks to get the maximum buck for the least risk of getting robbed of stolen possessions or busted.
