The MLS, for Major League Soccer, the United States’ professional soccer league, is the last place you would look for a fan base. Baseball, basketball and American tackle football teams have huge fan bases, as do colleges. But MLS is mostly known as a minor league to the English Premier League and La Liga. But don’t tell that to the fans who make a party of every match held at home in Portland, Oregon, cheering for their beloved Portland Timbers in the friendly confines of Jeld-Wen Field. To any other venue in the MLS, there is no compare. This team has FANS.
At this time of the year, an emerging tradition at ballparks and stadiums across the United States is an annual “LGBT Day,” where a special pre-game ceremony welcomes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender fans, family and friends and the franchise commits itself to fighting homophobia. I would have to say nobody does it like the Portland Timbers Army!
